The process
Four steps, start to finish
Most people can complete the check in a couple of minutes. The main thing you need before starting is the correct 17-character VIN.
1
Find the VIN
You can usually find the 17-character VIN on the registration papers, at the bottom of the windscreen on the driver’s side, or on the sticker inside the driver’s door frame. If you are checking a car from a distance, ask the seller to send you a clear photo of it.
2
Enter it and pay
Enter the VIN and your email address, then pay $9.95 by card. The payment is handled securely by Stripe, and VerifyCar does not store your card details.
3
We search the registers
We use the VIN to check the available information from PPSR and NEVDIS. The search is carried out for the vehicle linked to the VIN you provide, so take a moment to check the number before submitting it.
4
Read your report
Once the check is complete, your vehicle history report will arrive in your inbox. It includes the available vehicle information along with the official PPSR certificate, giving you something you can review before buying the car.
Before you start
Where to find the VIN
Every road vehicle has its own VIN, and it is normally shown in more than one place. If you are buying privately and are not with the car, simply ask the seller for a clear photo of the VIN before you run the check.
Base of the windscreen
Stand outside the vehicle on the driver’s side and look through the windscreen towards the corner of the dashboard. On most cars, you will see a small plate or window showing the VIN.
Driver door frame
Open the driver’s door and check the frame or pillar around the door opening. The compliance sticker normally shows the VIN along with other details about the vehicle.
Registration papers
You can also find the VIN on the vehicle’s registration documents and some insurance paperwork. Check that the number on the documents matches the number on the car. If they are different, do not ignore it. Ask the seller to explain the difference before you go ahead with the purchase.
What a VIN looks like
JM0KF4W7A00394567
Always exactly 17 characters, letters and digits mixed. The letters I, O and Q are never used, so a character that looks like one of those is a 1 or a 0. Anything shorter than 17 is not a VIN — it is probably the engine number.
If something goes wrong
No result, no charge
There may be times when a search cannot be completed. If this happens, you are refunded in full automatically. You do not need to fill out a form or contact us just to request the refund.
When it happens
This can happen if the VIN has been entered incorrectly or does not match the records available for the vehicle. Sometimes a character can also be difficult to read from a plate or photograph. In some cases, a register may be temporarily unavailable.
What we do
When a search cannot be completed, the payment is automatically refunded to the card used for the transaction. We also send you an email confirming the refund, so you know what happened to the payment.
What to do next
Check the VIN again against the vehicle, registration papers or another reliable source and try once more. If the same problem continues, email us the VIN and we can help you work out what may be causing the issue.
