Here are the common questions buyers have before running a check, including the things that are not available yet. If you cannot find your answer here, send us an email and a real person will get back to you.
Before you check
What is a PPSR check?
The Personal Property Securities Register is the Australian Government register of security interests. A PPSR check can show whether a vehicle has money owing against it, has been written off or has been reported as stolen.
What do I need to run a check?
You only need the vehicle’s 17-character VIN and an email address. There is no account to set up and no other information is required.
Where do I find the VIN?
You can find the VIN on the registration papers, at the bottom of the windscreen on the driver’s side or on the sticker inside the driver’s side door frame. It contains 17 letters and numbers. Our How it works page has a fuller guide if you need help finding it.
Can I search by registration number?
Not yet. Rego search is something we are working on, but a check currently requires the VIN. If you cannot find it, ask the seller to send you a clear photo of the vehicle’s compliance plate.
Do you cover every Australian state?
Yes. The PPSR and NEVDIS are national registers, so the same check can be used for vehicles across every Australian state and territory.
The report
Do I get the official certificate?
Yes. Every report includes the official PPSR certificate issued under the PPS Act 2009 as a PDF. It provides the official record of the PPSR search.
How fast is it?
Reports are generated live and usually arrive in your inbox within a few minutes after payment.
Can I open my report again later?
Yes. Your email contains a report link that remains active for 30 days. The certificate PDF is also attached, so you can save it for your own records.
Does the report show odometer history?
Not yet. Odometer history is something we plan to add in the future. At the moment, the report covers write-off records, stolen records, money owing, vehicle details and the official certificate.
Does the report tell me who owns the car?
No. Consumer reports do not provide the registered owner’s personal details. The report instead shows records that can affect your purchase, such as finance owing, write-off history or a stolen vehicle record.
Price, payment and who we are
Why is it only $9.95?
The search and report process is automated from start to finish. We pay the government search fee and handle the report generation without a call centre or additional service layers. This allows us to offer the check at $9.95.
Is my payment secure?
Payments are processed through Stripe, used by millions of businesses worldwide. Your card details are handled by Stripe and do not reach our servers.
What if the search cannot be completed?
If the search cannot be completed, you receive an automatic full refund. You do not need to contact us separately to request it.
Who runs VerifyCar?
VerifyCar is operated by CarAssure, a pre-purchase vehicle inspection business. The team works with vehicle buyers and inspections, with more information available on the About page.
